Are You Happy With Your Roads?

      • Public votes on a Single County TSPLOST on November 7, 2017 (est. cost: $12,698)
      • TSPLOST is a Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax
      • 1% sales tax increase
      • It would run for 5 years
      • Tax would begin on April 1, 2018 and sunset on March 31, 2023
      • Tax would generate about $3 million a year
      • Walker County would get 75% or $2.25 million
      • LaFayette would get 11.67% or $350,100
      • Rossville would get 6.3% or $189,000
      • Chickamauga would get 3.77% or $113,100
      • Lookout Mountain would get 2.87% or $86,100
      • Fort Oglethorpe would get 0.39% or $11,700
  • Walker County will use TSPLOST money to match a state grant known as LMIG (Local Maintenance Improvement Grant) to bring in close to $1 million in additional money for roads each year.
  • There is almost $1 million in LMIG funds in the bank now and more than $1 million coming at end of year. If not used, LMIG funds must be returned after three years.
  • There are 674 miles of county roads.
  • It currently costs about $100,000 to resurface a mile of county road.
  • Along with paving, five bridges need repaired. School buses are not allowed to cross these bridges.
  • The county will not have money for two years to pave roads without the TSPLOST.
  • Walker County will not borrow (bond) money for roads – We will PAY AS WE GO.
  • TSPLOST will be kept in a fund separate of other county funds.
  • Each local government will get to decide which roads they want to pave.
  • Sales tax does not apply to gasoline or diesel fuel.
