JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and managing a multifaceted county government fleet and equipment consisting of the maintenance, repair, and overhauling of county assets.
Including but not limited to passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, heavy-duty trucks, mowing tractors, light and heavy-duty construction equipment, generators, and small powered hand equipment, consisting of a wide range of 2-cycle, 4-cycle both gasoline and diesel-powered engines, as well as specialized emergency service vehicles and related equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Manages routine maintenance, as well as minor and major repairs of county fleet and equipment, including specialized emergency services vehicles and related equipment.
- Diagnoses complex mechanical problems and repair needs; seeks outside diagnosis when necessary.
- Supervises, prioritizes, schedules, and assigns repair work to shop personnel; inspects repairs upon completion for quality control.
- Develops and manages an ongoing preventative maintenance program for the entire county’s equipment and fleet.
- Schedules outside contractors to perform service outside the ability of staff.
- Trains staff in various aspects of operations maintenance and repair
- Directs the cleaning and maintenance of shop facilities and equipment.
- Performs or oversees preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
- Organization of inside and out of shop facilities
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations and safety, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
- Administers and maintains the county fueling station.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCES
- More than five years of related experience is required.
- Knowledge and level of competency are commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years of experience or service.
- Knowledge of management and supervision techniques.
- Knowledge of purchasing procedures.
- Knowledge of state guidelines and standards for the maintenance of emergency vehicles.
- Skill in developing short- and long-range plans.
- Knowledge of relevant local, state, and federal regulations.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Operates a variety of shop equipment and tools associated with fleet maintenance activities, including, general office equipment or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.
- Effectively communicate in the English language both in writing and orally.
- Accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
- Ability to organize tasks and daily assignments for co-workers efficiently.
- Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

- LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must be able to communicate effectively (orally and written), possess excellent presentation skills, and ability to lead discussions and meetings.
- MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Basic knowledge of math skills. Ability to formulate and evaluate financial proposals and analyze “deals”
- REASONING ABILITY: Must be able to analyze data, determine trends and apply the results. Ability to anticipate reactions from the public, elected officials, business community, and governmental agencies in order to manage various situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- A valid driver’s license, and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the Fleet Maintenance Director job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable people with disabilities to perform the essential duties of this job.
While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to regularly stand for extended periods, frequently walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch, and lift or move up to 35 pounds frequently and 75 pounds occasionally. Pulling, pushing, tugging, and towing when moving tires, parts, and equipment are also performed on a frequent basis.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is usually exposed to a noise level that is moderate to loud/frequent. Use of and exposure to strong cleaning chemicals and disinfectants, other allergens, and zoonotic disease occurs daily. Works both inside and outside all year round in a variety of weather conditions. Part of the job requires working without the aid of air conditioning and heating for periods of time.
This position is also required to work some on weekends and holidays.
Shop will be staffed during county emergency situations.
