The Walker County Board of Commissioners took the following actions at their meeting on September 3rd:
- The Board approved the FY2027 budget, which takes effect October 1, 2026 and runs through September 30, 2027. The $39.9 million budget includes funding for three new firefighters, no other new positions, a 3% COLA (cost of living adjustment) for county employees, the same budget allowance as FY26 for all departments, and covers inflationary increases, state mandates, and a new ambulance service contract. In addition, the budget is balanced and supported by a full millage rate rollback and a $900,000 transfer from the Fund Balance.
- The Board adopted a policy restricting county employees from purchasing county surplus items
- The Board awarded a $2,200,000 contract to F.H. Paschen for attic remediation and roof repair at the Walker County Courthouse. Funding will come from the facilities program in the 2020 SPLOST
- The Board voted down a proposal to enter into a commercial lease agreement to relocate North Georgia Community Action to 108 West Villanow Street
- The Board issued a proclamation designating September as National Recovery Month in Walker County to raise awareness that recovery from mental health and substance abuse challenges is possible
