Walker County Board of Commissioners Plans Full Millage Rate Rollback

Walker County residents would benefit from a millage rate rollback if approved by the Board of Commissioners at their September 3rd meeting. It would be the eighth consecutive year the millage rate has been reduced, which lessens the impact of higher property appraisals on existing property owners.

The Board will consider setting the millage rate at 5.005 mills per $1,000 of assessed value for the unincorporated areas, a 2.87% reduction. Under the proposal, the millage rate would be set at 6.489 mills for the incorporated areas, a 2.66% decrease. The data can be found in the 2026 Property Tax Digest and 5 Year History of Levy, published today.

Compared to last year, the average Walker County resident who owns a home valued at $250,000 and claims a homestead exemption would save $14.21 in county maintenance and operation taxes if they live in the unincorporated area. The difference would be $15.29 in the incorporated area.

2026 2025 Difference
Unincorporated $490.49 $504.70 -$14.21
Incorporated $635.92 $651.21 -$15.29

Property owners may experience additional tax savings thanks to action taken by the Walker County Board of Education. The Board of Education voted to adopt the full rollback millage rate of 14.013 mills, which will save the average resident from the example above an additional $39.69.

2026 2025 Difference
County Schools $1,373.27 $1,412.96 -$39.69

New tax revenue from existing home sales, along with new home construction, contributed to $411,066 in new revenue for county operations. Last year, growth was stagnant as many existing homes sold at prices under assessed values.

Property that increased in value from one year to the next may experience a higher tax bill as a result of the higher value, but that does not mean their tax rate increased.
