Board Approves FY 2027 Budget with No Tax Increase

The board of commissioners meet on September 3, 2026

The Walker County Board of Commissioners took the following actions at their meeting on September 3rd:

  • The Board approved the FY2027 budget, which takes effect October 1, 2026 and runs through September 30, 2027. The $39.9 million budget includes funding for three new firefighters, no other new positions, a 3% COLA (cost of living adjustment) for county employees, the same budget allowance as FY26 for all departments, and covers inflationary increases, state mandates, and a new ambulance service contract. In addition, the budget is balanced and supported by a full millage rate rollback and a $900,000 transfer from the Fund Balance.
  • The Board adopted a policy restricting county employees from purchasing county surplus items
  • The Board awarded a $2,200,000 contract to F.H. Paschen for attic remediation and roof repair at the Walker County Courthouse. Funding will come from the facilities program in the 2020 SPLOST
  • The Board voted down a proposal to enter into a commercial lease agreement to relocate North Georgia Community Action to 108 West Villanow Street
  • The Board issued a proclamation designating September as National Recovery Month in Walker County to raise awareness that recovery from mental health and substance abuse challenges is possible
