The Walker County Fire Marshal’s Office (Division of Prevention, Education, and Investigation) is staffed by three full time employees organized into three primary job duties: Prevention/Education, Inspections, and Investigations.  The division is led by the Fire Marshal.

Prevention / Public Education
Walker County Fire Rescue Division of Prevention, Education, and Investigations conducts prevention and public education classes that include HeartSaver and BLS CPR, Caregiver Fire Safety, and fire prevention programs in Walker County Schools.  Community events, touch a truck and fire station tours are scheduled by the Fire Marshal’s Office.  The smoke alarm program is also managed by the Fire Marshal’s Office.  Contact us at (706) 539-1255 for more information or to schedule a free smoke alarm installation.

Inspections/Permits
The Fire Marshal’s Office conducts plans review for new construction, business license inspections, and inspections for new and existing buildings and structures other than one and two family dwellings and townhomes separated by a two-hour fire wall.  Building/Construction permits are issued by the Planning and Zoning Office after the plans have been approved by the Fire Marshal’s Office.  Special event permits are issued by the Planning and Zoning Office after being approved.  Fireworks display permits are issued by the Probate Court after being approved by the Fire Marshal’s Office.  The Walker County Fire Marshal’s Office utilizes adopted codes to ensure:

  1. Recognized and potential fire and life safety hazards are identified and mitigated.
  2. Reliable egress for occupants from structures
  3. Fire protection and life safety systems are installed and maintained to operate in an effective manner.
  4. Buildings are accessible to help responding fire crews mitigate any fire or life safety emergency.

Fire Investigation
The Walker County Fire Marshal’s Office conducts fire investigations of all structure fires that occur within the response jurisdiction of Walker County Fire Rescue.  Vehicle fires are investigated on an as needed basis.  All three staff members of the Fire Marshal’s Office are Certified Fire Investigators.  Two fire Investigators are P.O.S.T Certified Peace Officers with powers of arrest.  The Accelerant Detection Canine Team is also part of the Fire Marshal’s office.  The Accelerant Detection canine handler is the Fire Marshal.
