Facts Matter: Returning County Owned Property to the Tax Rolls

A newspaper with the headline "Facts Matter."

Over the years, Walker County has accumulated several pieces of property that have no specific public purpose. Many of these properties were gifted to the county and not purchased.

County staff recently took inventory of all county owned land and discovered roughly two dozen parcels that may be better served in the hands of private citizens or business owners.

Today, one of those properties is being made available for purchase (see below). Parcel number 2007-032 is a half-acre tract that is located on McFarland Avenue in Rossville. It was part of the land donated by the Coats American company in 2007 and has sat vacant ever since.

Why sell county owned property? The most obvious reason is property owned by the government is exempt from local property taxes. This shifts the tax burden onto private homeowners and businesses.

There’s also a cost associated with holding property with no specific purpose. Aside from potential liability, the county remains responsible for maintenance and upkeep.

In addition, when a county hoards property, there is lost economic opportunity that can occur when a private developer, family, or business improves the land.

The list of parcels identified includes: 0496-014, 0525-013A, 0114-007B, 0072-157, 0393-006, 0146-080A, 0157-097, 2005-055, 0002-013B, 0002-013D, 0562-011, 0002-013C, 0002-013E, 0002-013A, 0072-156, 1049-008, 0124-003A, 2007-032, 2007-002, 2007-003, 2001-077B, 2002-095, 2007-001, 2007-006, and 0062-041.
