Walker County Awarded Georgia Recreational Trail Program Grant to Remediate Walker Rocks Trail

An old gravel trail is seen off in the distance behind some trees.

Walker County has been awarded a Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant to help fund remediation of Walker Rocks Trail on the Walker County Civic Center campus.

The county will renovate the existing public access pedestrian trail by replacing the temporary gravel surface with a permanent surface, like asphalt or bonded rubber. Renovating the trail will eliminate washouts that regularly close the trail until repairs can be made and allow users to access it year-round.

The county will receive $200,000 from RTP for the project and will include an additional $80,000 match. Along with the trail remediation, signage highlighting attractions in Walker County will be added along the path. The project is expected to get underway this fall.

RTP is a federal grant program funded by the Federal Highway Administration and administered by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
