Walker County Coroner Billy Sims has a new location to conduct business and meet with the public. Sims and his team recently moved into the northeastern corner of the Walker County Health Department building on Villanow Street in LaFayette.

Along with office space, the new location is equipped with a refrigerated morgue, providing family members a place within the county to view the body of a loved one. Previously, the coroner had to transport bodies to the morgue at CHI Memorial Hospital or elsewhere until the body could be released to the family.

The Walker County Coroner determines the cause and time of death, certifies death certificates, and transports bodies to the state crime lab, among other responsibilities. The Coroner is also responsible for deciding if a port-mortem examination is necessary in cases where someone has died suddenly or unusually.
You can reach the Coroner’s Office by calling 706-375-5621 (office) or 423-227-8658 (cell).
