The Walker County Board of Commissioners debate the future of recreational services in Rossville. That’s ahead on Walker This Week.
Following a structural change in how Rossville plans to provide recreational programming – and the lack of a formalized use agreement between the city and county… the two government entities continue to explore options to allow the city to use Walker County’s gym and football field to offer basketball, football and cheerleading.
Operating under a prior agreement, the county had been paying about $48,500 a year in utilities at both the gym, which it owns, and the ballpark, which the city owns. The City has agreed to start paying the utilities at the ballpark, but would like the county to continue to pay utilities at the gym and community center.
Rossville recently hired a new recreation director after dissolving a contract with the Rossville Athletic Association to provide recreational programming. The Board tabled a proposed use agreement with the city until its next meeting.

A number of building and renovation projects moved forward this week. Crews installed a new roof on the future Walker County Board of Elections and Registration headquarters in LaFayette. The inside of the old Family Dollar building has also been gutted, so it can be modernized for office space, early voting, vote tabulations and other needs.
Meanwhile, just down the road, the company hired to perform exterior restoration work at the courthouse started that project.
And, a ribbon cutting for the new Walker Rocks Park will take place July 31st. Public Works crews completed a retaining wall along the new A-D-A ramp to prevent the soil underneath from sliding forward during a storm. Although the formal opening is weeks away, the public is now welcome to come out and play.
