Walker County will receive $25,000 from a federal grant program administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. The funds will be used for the second phase of a resurvey of historic resources in Walker County.

The project scope includes reviewing over 250 potentially historic resources in southern Walker County (shaded in red) between Highway 151 and West Armuchee Valley Road. The research team selected will be tasked with looking at residential buildings, commercial buildings, community landmark buildings, agriculture buildings, as well as other structures and objects like water towers, wells, bridges, fortifications, sculptures, monuments, and fountains.

“Local governments are integral to creating environments for lasting, community-backed preservation efforts,” said Jennifer Flood, Historic Preservation Division Director. “The varied preservation tools utilized by these grant recipients will help ensure their built heritage remains for future generations.”

Walker County is one of eight Georgia municipalities to be awarded a federal subgrant to support historic preservation activities. The county is currently wrapping up the first phase of the resurvey, which covered the Armuchee Valley (shaded in green) area.

This federal subgrant is a product of a federal program managed by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Park Service.
