JOB SUMMARY

The Building Inspector is responsible for inspecting and documenting all aspects of building construction, including plumbing, electrical, footings, rough-ins, and final inspections on new and remodeled construction. The person holding this position also works with the public and contractors to ensure all construction meets local and national building codes and ordinances through all phases of construction. In addition, the Building Inspector works in conjunction with Environmental Health on sewer and septic installations and system upgrades.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Evaluate property and building sites against all county codes and ordinances
  • Review the overall building or remodeling project to ensure that all building construction workmanship meets or exceeds all county building codes and ordinances
  • Assist as needed in fires, floods, storms and disaster recovery operations
  • Maintain all records, including digital copies, photos, videos, and hard copies as required in a timely and organized manner
  • Other duties as assigned. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • One year working in the construction industry

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong working knowledge of county codes and ordinances
  • Knowledge of construction and building standards
  • Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with the general public
  • General safety rules and regulations pertaining to duties
  • Use of computers, copiers, telephones, and other general office equipment
  • Use of tape measure, camera, iPad and smartphone
  • Computer literacy, with a working knowledge of iWorQ online software, Microsoft Office, Google WorkSpace and the Walker County Tax Assessor’s Website
  • Procedures and policies pertaining to duties
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must be able to communicate effectively (orally and written), possess excellent presentation skills, and ability to lead discussions and meetings. 
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Basic knowledge of math skills. Ability to formulate and evaluate financial reports
  • REASONING ABILITY: Must be able to analyze data, determine trends and apply the results. Ability to anticipate reactions from the public, elected officials, business community, and governmental agencies in order to manage various situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • A valid driver’s license and maintaining a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)
  • Red Card (EPD) for stormwater soil erosion issues, or the ability to obtain one
  • Certifications or professional licenses in the building inspection industry

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, climb, bend, crouch and twist to perform such tasks as:

  • Walking around the work site on uneven terrain
  • Lifting supplies, equipment and files
  • Sitting at a desk, in meetings or while driving
  • Reaching for objects
  • Kneeling, bending or crouching to file or retrieve objects from lower shelves or the ground
  • Crawling under equipment or inside attics, pipes or ditches
  • Pushing and pulling file drawers or tables and chairs
  • Climbing stairs and ladders
  • Twisting from computer to phone, getting inside vehicle, getting through tight places
  • Hand and foot dexterity is required to operate office equipment and paperwork.
  • Good vision is required for all functions.
  • This position must be able to lift 25 pounds occasionally.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is usually exposed to a noise level that is moderate to loud.

About 75% to 85% of the work is performed outdoors daily and in seasonally extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, as well as rain and other environmental elements.

About 5% to 10% of the time is spent in an office with a controlled environment, and about 10% to 15% of the time is spent driving from one location to another in traffic and weather conditions normal to the Walker County region.

Physical hazards include dangerous equipment, noise, vibration, and exposure to foul smells, fumes, gases, chemicals, dust and dirt from time to time. The employee will be expected to wear proper protective equipment including, protective eyewear, gloves, protective footwear, a hard hat and a reflective safety vest.
