Side Door Recycling Bin Improves Accessibility at Landfill

At the request of Chairwoman Angie Teems, and in response to community input, the Walker County Landfill worked with our recycler, Smurfit Westrock, to obtain a recycling container with sliding side doors for easier access. The existing container has proven to be too tall for many residents, making it difficult to unload materials. This new container addresses that concern and improves accessibility for our recyclers. The taller container is still available for use and is typically better suited for large or bulky items.

In addition to easier access, the sliding-door design helps reduce moisture in the waste stream. Because disposal costs are based on weight and charged per ton, reducing excess moisture helps lower our recycling costs.

For recycling guidelines, customers can visit the landfill page. A chart provided by our recycler explains what can and cannot be recycled. Accepted materials include plastics numbered one through seven, clean cans with no food residue, paper, cardboard, and newspapers. Please do not crush any cans that you intend to recycle.

Please note that any food scraps or food-contaminated materials in the recycling container will void the entire load. While the program is free to the community, the County pays Smurfit Westrock a recycling fee through the landfill budget, and contamination can result in paying for a load that cannot be recycled.

Residents are advised to call the landfill at 706-375-8910 before bringing recyclables to make sure there is space available in the bins, as the recycling program has been very active and popular. We appreciate the community’s participation and cooperation.
