Pay rate: $30.37 per hour.

JOB SUMMARY

Walker County Government is seeking a skilled and dependable Diesel Mechanic to join our Fleet Services team. The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel-powered vehicles and equipment used across various county departments. This includes, but is not limited to, heavy trucks, construction equipment, emergency vehicles, and generators.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems on diesel-powered vehicles and equipment
  • Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, brake jobs, and filter replacements
  • Utilize diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot issues
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records in accordance with county and departmental procedures
  • Operate equipment and vehicles to test performance
  • Ensure repairs and maintenance are performed in compliance with all safety regulations and environmental guidelines
  • Respond to road calls and emergencies as needed
  • Order parts and assist with inventory control as necessary
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCES

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Technical certification or vocational training in diesel mechanics preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in diesel engine repair and maintenance
  • Strong working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and diagnostic tools
  • Ability to lift heavy parts and equipment (up to 75 lbs) and work in a physically demanding environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to be able to lift at least 45 pounds. He/She must be able to stand and squat for extended periods of time. He/She must be able to stand, sit, squat, bend and reach over his/her head. Other physical demands include but are not limited to.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the required duties of a Diesel Mechanic the employee can be exposed to moderate noise levels.  Duties can be performed in the shop, at other locations assigned by the shop supervisor or Fleet Technician IV, including outdoor areas.  Environmental factors include extreme weather conditions at times.  There are also times that a technician could be exposed to respiratory hazards including fumes from gases, chemicals, dust, and dirt.  The Walker County Fleet includes automobiles, light trucks, agricultural mowers and tractors, emergency vehicles, medium to heavy duty trucks and equipment.  Exposure to dangerous machinery.  PPE should be worn as needed.
