Walker County Animal Shelter Resumes Intake By Appointment Only

Chickamauga, GA – The Walker County Animal Shelter will resume intake of owner surrender and stray animals in August by appointment only.  Residents must call ahead at 706-375-2100 and schedule a date/time to drop off unwanted dogs and cats.

“We’re asking residents to call and schedule an appointment, so we can balance the load and keep our staff from being overwhelmed,” said Commissioner Shannon Whitfield.  “The shelter was not designed to hold an infinite number of dogs and cats.  We need to manage intake with capacity, so that the shelter doesn’t become overcrowded again.”

Walker County temporarily suspended intake in late June when the shelter population reached 122 animals.  Currently, there are 59 dogs and cats housed at the shelter.

The reduction in population provided an opportunity for maintenance staff to make repairs at the shelter, perform needed maintenance and make several upgrades.

The shelter also begins August with the appointment of Emily Sadler as manager, a new logo and a community organized supply drive to restock the shelter, after reserves diminished following the increase in intake at the start of summer.

Community volunteer Charity Lewis coordinated the Saturday, August 3rd event.  Donation needs include dog and cat food, treats, litter, unscented baby wipes, Clorox wipes, paper towels and other items.  The Pause 4 Paws supply drive will be held from Noon until 6:00 p.m. in front of Walmart, 2625 Highway 27 in LaFayette.  For additional information or to volunteer, contact Lewis at 423-827-4093.

Walker County Animal Shelter Partners with Atlanta Humane Society to Save More Dogs & Cats

Atlanta Humane Society Van

Chickamauga, GA – The Walker County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center and the Atlanta Humane Society (AHS) have joined forces to help save more dogs and cats from our community.  The new partnership gives the Shelter access to another non-profit organization with a mission of finding forever homes for adoptable animals.

Animals in crates being transported to AHSLast year, the Shelter took in 2,607 dogs and cats.  Over 60% of those animals were adopted, sent to a rescue or returned to their original owner.  The numbers show a significant improvement over 2016’s combined save rate of 44%.  Shelter Manager Stephanie McTaggart says partnerships like this will build on that momentum, benefiting more animals.

“AHS is a wonderful organization that has a proven track record of placing pets.  All of the animals transferred from Walker County to AHS will be placed in great homes, giving them a chance they might not have here locally,” said McTaggart.

AHS transported eight dogs and nine cats out of Walker County this morning.  The Shelter hopes to send healthy, vaccinated dogs under 25 pounds, along with puppies, cats and kittens to AHS once a month.

She also wants to improve volunteer opportunities through a new service program. An additional focus will be to enhance access online to lost/found and adoptable animals.

‘Adopt-A-Thon’ Pricing Extended at the Walker County Animal Shelter After A Successful Weekend

Chickamauga, GA – 24 animals found new homes during the Walker County Animal Shelter’s “12 Hours of Christmas Adopt-A-Thon” this weekend. The 17 dogs and 7 cats will be spayed/neutered and receive a rabies vaccination before joining their new families for the holidays.
The event featured special adoption pricing to encourage potential pet owners to tour the Walker County Animal Shelter, located at 5488 North Marble Top Road near Chickamauga. Thanks in part to lower fees and a visit from Santa, the Shelter doubled its goal of adopting out at least one dog or cat every hour during the “Adopt-A-Thon.”

Still, a number of people who visited the Shelter this weekend were unable to make a same day commitment. Recognizing continued demand and the benefits of placing more animals into loving homes, Shelter Director David Brown agreed to extend the special adoption pricing through the end of the year.

Adopt fees will be set at $30 for dogs and $15 for cats until the close of business December 30th. Regular adoption fees of $65 for dogs and $30 for cats will return when the Shelter reopens to the public on January 2nd. All animals available for adoption will be spayed or neutered and vaccinated for rabies before being released.

The Shelter is open for adoptions from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. In observance of the holidays, the Shelter will be closed Monday, December 25th; Tuesday, December 26th; and Monday, January 1st.

Walker County Animal Shelter Hosts ’12 Hours of Christmas’ Adopt-A-Thon

Chickamauga, GA – The Walker County Animal Shelter will host a “12 Hours of Christmas Adopt-A-Thon” on Saturday, December 16th. The event will run from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the shelter, located at 5488 North Marble Top Road near Chickamauga.

The shelter will offer special adoption pricing during the Christmas Adopt-A-Thon. Dogs will be $30, while cats will be $15. Regular adoption fees run $65 for dogs and $30 for cats. All animals available for adoption will be spayed or neutered and vaccinated for rabies.

“We hope this event will encourage someone interested in pet ownership to give the gift of family to one of our shelter pets,” said Stephanie Lea, Shelter Rescue Coordinator. “A new home would be greater than the grandest gift mentioned in the ‘12 Days of Christmas’ song. Inspired by that theme, we want to adopt out at least one animal every hour during the adopt-a-thon.”

Community members are also encouraged to drop by the shelter between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. during the Christmas Adopt-A-Thon for pet photos with Santa. A professional photographer will be available, providing printed photos for a nominal fee, or you can use your own camera for free. Visitors are also invited to tour the shelter during the event.

“Walker County has made great strides this year toward increasing the number of live outcomes at our shelter,” said Joe Legge, Public Relations Director for Walker County. “The number of dogs adopted, sent to a rescue or returned to their owner is up about 7% compared to 2016. Our live outcomes for cats is even better, improving about 20%.”

Events like the ‘12 Hours of Christmas Adopt-A-Thon’ continue the Walker County Animal Shelter’s mission of placing adoptable animals into good, loving homes.

WALKER COUNTY’s ANIMAL SHELTER OFFERS FREE ADOPTIONS DURING “PRICELESS PETS” PROMOTION!

Lots of people inside the Animal Shelter

Chickamauga, GA – Pets are priceless. Money can’t buy the memories and experiences they create with their owners. That’s why pets really are priceless at the Walker County Animal Shelter!

During the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the Walker County Animal Shelter will take an unconventional approach to encourage pet adoptions. On Friday, May 26th and Saturday, May 27th, the shelter will waive its regular adoption fee, offering pet seekers an opportunity to make a match and bring home a new family member for free.

The Shelter recently embarked on a new mission to increase the number of animals saved in Walker County and reduce euthanasia rates. As part of that effort, all dogs and cats of age are now vaccinated and spayed/neutered before leaving the facility. The Shelter has also strengthened connections with rescue groups capable of helping animals find new homes.

Dogs and cats housed at shelters often become stressed by their surroundings, making them more susceptible to illness. The longer an animal stays sheltered, the greater their chances of becoming sick. To reduce that risk, Walker County Animal Shelter staff now encourages pet owners who want to surrender their animals to foster them at home, allowing shelter staff to search for a new forever family.

While it’s still early, animal tracking data shows significant improvement. Through the first four months of 2017, nearly 79% of all animals brought to the Walker County Animal Shelter have been saved. This number includes animals adopted, sent to rescues and returned to their owners.

To maintain this momentum, the shelter needs more volunteers to walk, wash and train dogs. While searching for a match, pet seekers can add their name to an upcoming volunteer information and orientation session to learn how shelter service can be a rewarding experience.

“Priceless Pets” will be offered from 10am to 4pm on Friday, May 26th and 8:00am to 1:00pm on Saturday, May 27th at the Walker County Animal Shelter, 5488 North Marbletop Road, Chickamauga. Those who rent should bring proof of a pet friendly lease to speed up the adoption process.
